Entangled seal rescue

On 3 August, BDMLR were made aware of an entangled grey seal at St Mary’s Island; roughly 1.3m in length and in excess of 50kg. On arrival, we found monofilament netting around its neck and left front flipper with full circumference ligature injury, fortunately only extending 10-15mm into the blubber.

Our medics managed to successfully remove all the netting material and clean the wound. The seal was then released back to the water.

Thanks to our medics, coordinators and to St Mary’s Seal Watch who all contributed to this successful outcome.
