Trustees’ Award: Alex Levine

Alex Levine, a long-standing Medic from the Kent region has been awarded a prestigious Outstanding Contribution to Marine Mammal Rescue Award by BDMLR’s Trustees. Alex was presented with the award by BDMLR Kent Area Coordinator, Jez Stone.

BDMLR Trustee Mark Stevens commented: “Alex Levine first became involved with BDMLR following the Thames whale incident in 2006, soon training as a Marine Mammal Medic and going on to rescue countless seals along the Kent coastline near her home region in Deal, Kent. Her dedication and leadership saw her take on the role of Area Coordinator for Kent, as well as becoming a Medic Instructor, helping to train and inspire new generations of volunteers. Alex also played a key role in monitoring a solitary dolphin, affectionately known as Dave, over a period of six months. This experience meant she was ideally suited to represent BDMLR in a MARC working group on solitary animals. Some of the procedures laid out then are what has formed part of the MARC protocols.

After several years in her coordinator role, Alex has now stood down as Area Coordinator for Kent, passing the reins to Jez Stone, who also had the pleasure of presenting her with this year’s Trustee Award.  Alex remains a fully active Medic, Instructor and Fundraiser, as well as serving as a Special Advisor to the Board of Trustees, compiling reports and offering expert guidance when needed. The Trustees hold great confidence in her judgement and are deeply grateful for her continued support, commitment and wisdom.”

Congratulations to Alex and thank you for all your hard work.

The Outstanding Contribution to Marine Mammal Rescue Awards (or Trustees Awards for short) are chosen by BDMLR Trustees Alan Knight, Mark Stevens, Geoff Hammock, Faye Archell and Gavin Parsons and presented to Medics who have gone above and beyond for the charity and demonstrated a dedication to helping the marine environment in a positive way.

This year there are 9 awards, however, due to the nature of the charity and the number and spread of directors and trustees not everyone will be presented at the same time, so over the coming weeks you will see who has received an award.
