Every year, hundreds of sick, injured, and orphaned seals are rescued around the UK. Many of them need more than first aid—they need specialist veterinary care, warmth, nutrition, and time to recover safely before returning to the wild.
BDMLR operates one dedicated marine mammal hospital and two smaller units across the UK, each one a lifeline for vulnerable pups and a vital part of our national rescue network.
Together, these hospitals and our other satellite units treat large numbers of seals every year—but they can only operate with the help of people who believe in giving wildlife a chance. To find out more about the units here: bdmlr.org.uk/bdmlr-seal-treatment-units

Seal rescue is unpredictable, seasonal, and often urgent. Storms, injuries, entanglement, disease, and orphaned pups can push our hospitals to capacity within hours.
Your support helps us stay ready—with staffed pens and pools, stocked supplies, and the resources to respond the moment an animal needs us.
There are many ways to support us:

Every seal pup in our hospitals needs a steady supply of high‑quality fish to grow stronger, heal, and prepare for release back into the wild. By buying a £10 fish voucher, you’re putting food directly into the mouths of the pups who need it most.
A single voucher helps us buy the fish that keeps a recovering seal warm, nourished, and gaining weight—often after days or weeks of struggling to survive on the coastline. With more pups arriving each year, our food bills rise quickly, and every voucher makes a real, immediate difference.
Buying a fish voucher is a simple way to support our hospitals and play a direct role in a seal’s journey back to the ocean. It’s practical, it’s impactful, and it helps save lives.

Our bespoke hospital pens are where the real magic happens. Each one is a safe, warm space where a seal pup can stabilise, heal, grow stronger, and prepare for release back into the wild.
Your sponsorship makes an immediate, tangible difference, and we make sure you feel part of that journey.

Our Cornwall Seal Hospital includes two outdoor pools, where seals take their next steps toward release. These pools are essential for:
Sponsoring a pool for £350 a year gives you all the same benefits as sponsoring a pen—including a plaque and regular updates—but they can also be sponsored by several supporters each year.

Our North East Seal Triage and Suffolk Seal Rescue units are the critical first stop for vulnerable seal pups in need of help. This is where they receive immediate assessment, warmth, hydration, and stabilisation. For many pups, triage is the moment that turns a crisis into a second chance.
Your sponsorship helps us respond quickly and compassionately when a pup needs urgent help and ensures every animal begins its recovery with the best possible care.
Sponsoring a pen at a triage/rescue unit for £500 a year gives you all the same benefits as sponsoring a hospital pen—including a plaque and regular updates—as well as the knowledge you’ve supported the very first stage of a pup’s path back to the wild. They can be sponsored by more than one supporter.
A triage unit may be small, but its impact is enormous. With your support, it becomes the place where frightened, exhausted pups take their first step toward survival.
Our seal hospitals rely on a constant supply of practical items to keep vulnerable pups safe, warm, and thriving during their recovery. From cleaning supplies to essential equipment, these everyday items make a huge difference to the care we can provide.
By choosing something from our Amazon Wishlists, you’re putting exactly what our teams need straight into the hands of the Marine Mammal Medics looking after sick and injured pups. It’s an easy, direct way to support our hospitals—and every item, big or small, helps us give rescued seals the best possible chance of returning to the wild.
Your kindness keeps our hospitals running and our pups on the road to recovery.

Flapjack, as he was named, a tiny grey seal pup arrived at our hospital one stormy afternoon. Pen 3 became the first safe space he had known in days. He was underweight, exhausted, and carrying the marks of a rough sea—the kind of pup who wouldn’t have survived without urgent help.
Inside the pen, everything changed.

A specialist marine animal vet and Marine Mammal Medics provided gentle, experienced hands to help stabilise him. They cleaned his wounds, gave essential fluids, and turned on a heat mat to provide warmth. As he rested, every small sign of strength was celebrated by his carers. Over the next few days, Pen 3 became Flapjack’s world: a place where he could sleep without fear, regain energy, and start to behave like a curious young seal again.

As the weeks passed, he grew brighter. He learned to take fish confidently, splashed water everywhere during cleaning time, and greeted his carers with that unmistakable wide‑eyed seal stare. When he was strong enough, he spent time in the outdoor pools.
But it all started in Pen 3, which, thanks to being sponsored, gave him safety, warmth, and the chance to heal—a real life saved, a wild future restored. Flapjack went on to full rehab, and then, a few weeks later, he was well enough to be released back into the wild. That’s him below, looking out at the Bristol Channel, and his first taste of real freedom a fit and healthy grey seal.

Flapjack would like to thank you for caring about him when he was so desperately in need of help. Without people like you, Flapjack would not have been cared for.
