On April 19 we closed the doors of our Mobile Seal Rescue Unit (MSRU) in Suffolk for the last time, and 10 days later we waved goodbye to it as it went to a new owner in its original form. For around 8 years the MSRU has been stationed in three locations to provide temporary accommodation for seal pups needing rehabilitation in specialised centres around the UK.
The MSRU placement in Suffolk has proved to be an immense success, with a fantastic team of experienced volunteers with many years of seal handling under their belts. Now, with the support of Whitworth Veterinary Practice, we are now able to set up a larger unit in place of the MSRU, providing an improved working space for BDMLR Medics, and a more comfortable environment for the pups we care for.
BDMLR Suffolk volunteers have been working tirelessly for many months applying for funding and attending events to raise awareness of the great work they do to help seals in East Anglia. Now with generous grants from the Seal Protection Action Group and the Arthur Camp Foundation and grants from Sea Changers, Felixstowe Town Council, National Landscapes Coasts & Heaths, as well as all the fundraising efforts of volunteers, we have been able to make great progress with the project, and aim to provide a new space for seal pup care very soon.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our new project, you can follow the progress we are making and further support the team by following the ‘BDMLR East Anglia’ page on Facebook.
