On Monday 20 April, British Divers Marine Life Rescue was alerted via the JSPCA to a live stranded dolphin in Jersey.
Marine Mammal Medics were tasked to the reported location, where on arrival they found a young common dolphin stranded on an exposed stretch of shoreline, with strong easterly winds and cold conditions adding to the challenges faced during the response.
Initial assessments were carried out with support from BDMLR Head Office and the veterinary team, alongside a vet from New Era Vets. The Medics provided first aid, with efforts focused on stabilising the animal, keeping the skin wet, and monitoring breathing. A temporary dam was constructed to help retain water around the dolphin, while specialist equipment was deployed to support handling and reduce further stress.
The dolphin was identified as an underweight and maternally dependent calf, so a search of the surrounding area was carried out for other dolphins; however, none were located. Considering additional factors, including overall body condition and environmental conditions, veterinary guidance determined the dolphin was not a suitable candidate for an attempt at a refloat, and euthanasia was the most appropriate course of action to prevent further suffering.
We would like to thank all those involved in the response, including the first informants of the incident, La Hocq Café for providing supplies for the attending team, Jersey Coastguard for their assistance and safety cover, and Fisheries personnel for helping manage public presence at the scene.
While not every outcome has the ending we hope for, preventing further suffering is sometimes the kindest course of action. The coordinated response ensured this animal received the best possible care in difficult circumstances.
This incident marked BDMLR’s 20th cetacean response in April alone. A reminder of just how often our teams are needed.
Public support is what makes these responses possible. Every callout relies on trained volunteers, specialist equipment and ongoing care for animals in need.
