Five stranded pilot whales were reported to British Divers Marine Life Rescue by a member of public on 4 December 2018. The whales were stranded in shallow water near Culross, Fife.
The charity alerted its local volunteers and requested assistance from the MCA (coastguard). The animals were identified as long-finned pilot whales and were able to refloat themselves on the rising tide despite a couple of them having been upside-down.
Four of the five animals swam off across the water towards the south side of the Forth and have not been seen since, with another remaining in the bay. BDMLR are on the look out for any animals in the area and would appreciate any sightings being reported to them on 01825 765546.
