On Saturday 2 August, less than three months since the project started, BDMLR’s Suffolk Seal Rescue Unit (SSRU) officially opened.
Thanks to months of hard work, fundraising, applying for grants, and sheer determination from our incredible volunteer Medics, we now have an improved dedicated space in East Anglia to care for seal pups in need after the BDMLR Mobile Seal Rescue Unit was retired.
The launch of the SSRU was celebrated by over 40 supporters, including BDMLR volunteers, the Deputy Mayor of Felixstowe Darren Aitchison, and Jamie Whittle from Whitworth Vets – whose support has been vital to the project.
We are now ready to welcome common seal pups to the unit, they will be assessed on site (or before) by veterinary professionals, looked after by trained volunteer Medics, then moved on to a final rehabilitation centre before being released to the wild.
This is a huge step forward for seal rescue in the region and we are grateful for all of the support to develop the unit. Follow our social media channels to keep up to date with the first pups to enter the SSRU!
